Dublin 2020 – City’s Bid to be European Capital of Culture
The year 2020 may seem like a long ways away, but if Dublin wants to win the bid to be the European Capital of Culture that year, it has to start now!
The European Capital of Culture is one of the largest cultural initiatives in Europe. The EU elects a designated city each year and uses it as a platform to promote the diversity of cultures that exist across Europe. Dublin will be competing against other cities in Ireland–Galway, Limerick, and a collection of towns in the Southeast–to win this prestigious opportunity.
The idea behind the capital of culture initiative is to demonstrate a sense of community, both within the chosen city and across Europe as a whole. It’s important to start spreading the word about Dublin’s bid now because a panel of judges will arrive in October to determine if Dublin has what it takes to move on to the next round of judging and become a Capital of Culture in 2020, and a citywide awareness of Dublin’s bid is crucial in their decision-making process.
Why is this such a good opportunity for Dublin?
The city chosen as a capital of culture will host a variety of events throughout 2020 showcasing the different cultures across Europe, and this will give Dublin the chance to emphasize that it is a vibrant, young and diverse city with a lot to offer for both residents and visitors alike. The benefits of Dublin winning its bid will continue for years, and it’s important that everyone in Dublin come together in the effort to compete for this honor–so get out and spread the word!
