Wheelchair friendly places to eat in #DublinTown

Written by Daniel Fortes on April 24, 2015. Posted in Bars Coffee Food Updates

We are delighted to have guest blogger, Louise Bruton from Legless in Dublin, talk about wheelchair friendly places in Dublin. Louise started using a wheelchair two years ago. Before that, she used crutches full time. At 17, she had her right foot amputated and from that point, many jokes about her being legless were thrown about. DublinTown is a blog for Dubliners from Dubliners. If you have an interesting idea and would like to write about it contact us on this address.

Picking a place for coffee, dinner or a good pint can be a difficult task but it’s even trickier when you use a wheelchair. Over on my blog, Legless in Dublin, I try to review places in terms of access but to make sure that the restaurant or bar is worth visiting anyway for its delicious food. Here are some of my favourite, totally wheelchair accessible places in Dublin to visit.

Honest To Goodness

12 Dame Court, Dublin 2, Ireland

Honest to Goodness is one of Dublin’s best places to visit for lunch with their hearty (and generously loaded) sandwiches, salads and soups. In the evening, their menu expands to burgers, hot dogs, Honest pizzas and more. The food is wholesome, the atmosphere is very laid-back and their access gets a full 10 points. Visiting here is an absolute must for those who can’t resist a decent sandwich.

Tapas de Lola

12 Wexford St, Dublin 2

While there are so many tapas bars in Dublin, Tapas de Lola is undoubtedly one of the best. Before you decide ‘how many dishes is too many’, you are generally greeted with a complimentary drink and someone to explain the more exotic dishes. You will probably have to book a table here as it’s in high demand but the food is worth the wait and make sure to request a low table to suit the wheelchair.

The Black Sheep

61 Capel Street, Dublin 1, Ireland

The Black Sheep is a great pub to spend an evening with some mates and lo and behold! it’s wheelchair accessible. You will lose some time mulling over their massive craft beer and cider menu and if you get peckish, their food is traditional pub grub the way it should be. It can get quite busy here – particularly over the weekend – but once you cosy into a table with some of the board games on offer, you’ll find it hard to leave.

250 Square

Williams Park, Rathmines

The coffee selection in 250 Square is an absolute dream but it’s the food options that will have you drooling. Each visit brings the tough decision between their baked eggs with tomato and chorizo or their baked potato with chilli con carne or the zingy and juicy kale and avocado sandwich. Access wise, there is a small lip at the front door but it’s all flat inside and they have a large wheelchair bathroom. The staff here are super helpful and it’s a very chilled out place to spend an afternoon.
